Computer Bridge

This is my first shot at this, partly out of curiosity and partly to open a dialogue with members here of a similiar interest.

One area of bridge that fascinates me is computer bridge and bridge programming. I do not mean playing bridge with others over the internet, although that's tons of fun. My interest is in bridge playing computer programs, and programming of this nature in general.

I have played around with several of the games commercially available and have made a few stabs at writing my own, although I quickly came to realize how difficult this is. One needs to be an expert (or nearly so) in both disciplines, programming and bridge, and I fell short of this in bridge. And programming.

However, I like to discuss this sort of thing with others, those who may have similar desires and setbacks, and those who have had successes.  It is a very narrow area of interest and so I don't expect to be swamped with comments, but there it is, if you so desire to join in.

Thanks, and have a great day!

Cheers,

Carl

As a followup, I'd be happy to do software reviews of programs such as GIB, Bridge Baron, Bridge Captain, etc is there is an active interest.

I tend to be honest to a fault though, so if that steps on toes, now is the time to tell me, thanks!

Cheers,
Carl

Hi Carl,

I had thought that I would write a bridge-playing program when I retired (about 14 years ago now) -- 28 years with IBM programming, teaching programming, and managing programmers in IBM's development laboratories in New York and on the west coast. Then I found Bridge Baron (BB). The program has everything I wanted to program including ESPECIALLY(!!) the ability to replay a given hand many, many times, or recreate a given hand over and over under different assumptions. These features have to me been invaluable -- ne' essential. There may be other programs that do the same thing, but I have no need for anything more. I'm running BB version 11 -- way back-level, I know -- but I don't need anything more.

Just saw your comments about programming and thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Best regards,
Paul

Let is be known, that BridgeBuddy.net is researching Bridge games available to include into our site. We are big fans of Bridge Baron as well. We have been in talks with them regarding using their "engine" to power game play on this site for our members.

We are considering contracting with a programmer to develop the Flash interface to connect with BB or maybe we partner with an already online version of Bridge game play.

We welcome any input from anyone regarding this. Obviously its not an easy integration, but in the end it will happen one way or another.

Bridge Captain version 6 has the ability for the user to review and edit any of the bid definitions, which opens up the field for system tinkerers everywhere. It's all driven by a simple user interface within the bidding box itself, and while you might have to spend a little bit of time getting familiar with it, you can do anything from tweak a standard bid to invent and enter your own convention.

For example, I like to play Five-card Stayman as described in Marty's ground-breaking book, Better Bidding with Bergen Volume 1. Well, there's no bridge playing program on the market that plays that particular arrangement, until now. I just entered the information into Bridge Captain as my own custom convention, and now I can play it that way. So can the opps, but I don't let them!

Paul, you need to upgrade your Bridge Baron. There's so many new conventions, it now plays Standard, 2/1, Precision and others, you can back up from the card play all the way back into the auction if you want. I like that it reads the cards to me as I play, so I don't need to find my glasses :) I am getting version 20 as soon as it's available.

Shonn, it would be great to be able to play online with Bridge Baron as the 4th, or 3rd and 4th, or maybe even if you are all by yourself and just want to take it for a road test. Please keep us posted on any breaking news there!

Cheers,
Carl
